This lovely vintage 1940s fashion hat belongs in a special historical category:

“… a noteworthy event of 20th century American fashion was the emergence of the film costume designer as an influence on everyday fashion. Prior to the 30s, Hollywood imported European fashion … Film Noir (French phrase meaning black film or cinema) is a term for movies mostly made between the early 1940s and the early 1950s – movies such as The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Laura …Hats worn by the characters in Film Noir movies featured dramatic and often angular silhouettes and wide brims with womens’ veiled hats employed to great effect.”

“The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war and on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. In fact the only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling and artificial flowers were popular. They were dubbed in France as ‘piece de resistance’ or ‘resistance piece’ against Nazi occupation. The ‘Doll’ hat, a very small hat that perched on the very front of the forehead, revived Victorian styles….” Vintage Fashion Guild

This particular hat by Jeanne Tete is in wonderful condition, with no flaws. The elastic cord which holds the hat in place by hiding at the back of your head, is tired and can be easily replaced if you wish. There really is no size involved as far as fitting. The elastic band can be used to adjust the angle and tilt you desire. The Film Noir style hat is one of the most flattering of vintage forties styles, being worn forward and at a tilt so as to frame the face and add height. Whether the veil is pulled up or worn full length, it will soften the features and add a dramatic effect.
